A Web Security PSA Because I Love You

Okay, I’ve never used Cloudflare before and I don’t own any stocks in it that I know so I’m passing this info along simply because I’m a dude* who hates having my cookies tracked and Facebook selling me out to the Russians and all the other creepy Dark Web stuff (or is it Deep Web stuff?) that I always feel threatened by and I assume you’re of the same mind, may god bless your poor soul if you are.

If you’re not familiar with Cloudflare, here is what pops up when asking Bing, what is Cloudflare:

CloudFlare is a free service that accelerates and secures your website by acting as a proxy between your visitors and HostGator servers. With CloudFlare, you can protect your website against malicious visitors, save bandwidth and reduce average page load times.

Anyway, above disclaimer aside, I have heard of Cloudflare before here and there around the net so, this morning when suffering through my daily romp through my MSN news aggregator and I saw an Engadget story entitled Cloudflare makes it harder for ISPs to track your web history, I was intrigued.

What I learned was a bunch of nerdy mumbo jumbo about how vulnerable we all are to our ISP’s tracking our browsing history and selling the information for profit and how authoritarian regimes can shut down sites via this that and the other technical nerdy stuff and Cloudflare has decided to make it harder for greedy ISPs to sell us out and for authoritarian regimes to shut us down by creating an open DSN something or other of 1.1.1.1.

That’s about as technically close as I can get to explaining it to you. The bottom line is this service that Cloudflare is offering is free, it’s easy to set up, and it will not only make your web browsing experience safer, it will make it noticeably faster, of which I can happily attest to.

So, if you want to learn more about Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 mission, which is a very interesting read and I encourage you to check it out, visit here.

If you want to give a middle finger straight away to the ISPs selling us out and the authoritarian regimes shutting us down and get right to learning how to easily set up your computer or phone or tablet so their DSN points directly to 1.1.1.1, then visit https://1.1.1.1/.

Oh and btw, if you want to be really serious about cruising the web anonymously, at least as anonymously as a non-technical web browsing plebe like myself can, then you need to be on a TOR browser. It’s what I use whenever researching sensitive topics for my writing, topics that could possibly trigger governmental interest, if you know what I mean.

There you have it – that’s my PSA.

You’re welcome.

And if you’re a dude** who hates dirty ISPs and Facebook and asshole authoritarians as much as I do then…

I love you.

  1. Not sure if this gender-nonspecific dude could follow anything more complicated than what you already wrote—non-techy plebe here—but I appreciate anyone willing to stand up and give the finger to Facebook and other asswipes well sold us out to theRussian hackers!

  2. It’s Dark Web and Deep State. Although they might actually be the same thing. Who knows? Anyhow, never heard of Cloudflare before, will have to check it out. If it’s faster, all the better. I know TOR can be really slow, but it’s also probably more secure.

    • There’s Dark Web and Deep Web – Deep Web are sites that can’t be indexed for some reason. The Dark Web is where all the creepy stuff happens. Deep State is found in the dark minds of paranoid alt-right conspiracy theorists. Yes, Tor is slower because of all the different networks a connections has to bounce around on to maintain its security.
