The Long War

I’m no dove – my twenty years in the navy will attest to that – but lately I’m feeling like a character in George Orwell’s 1984.

“No matter how hard he digs at his memory, Winston is uncertain whether a time existed when Oceania was not at war with someone.”

But still, I guess a Super Power’s gotta do what a Super Power’s gotta do…

  1. They don’t have to; they just choose to.

    Going to war is a choice, whether a moral one or an immoral one; whether a smart one or a foolish one…

    Even when one’s country is attacked, a nation’s government can choose how it will respond…

  2. True. Couldn’t be any other way. Life is existential and angst-ridden. I assume your comment was cued off the last sentence in the post, which implies that the US has no choice in going to war. I was hoping the sarcasm would show through but I guess it didn’t.

    1. Ah. No, I didn’t pick up on that; it’s hard to express such in this form, unless you use tricks like {sarcasm} {/sarcasm} around your sentence, or even just {/sarcasm} at the end; that’s what I do when I wish to express sarcasm and be clear about it. 🙂

      1. Tricks are for kids. {/smile}
